In Memoriam - Gavin Boyd (ON 1947-1957)

DR. GAVIN BOYD BSc(hons), MD(hons), FRCP (Glas & Edin)

(1940-2025)

Gavin Boyd was born in 1940 at Alexandra House, Stapleford, Nottingham to Dr John and Netta Boyd. He was the elder brother of Frances and Alexander. Educated at Nottingham High School 1947-1957 he excelled in science and on the games field at cricket.

He read medicine at Glasgow University. In his third year he was given the opportunity to study for an extra BSc hons degree in physiology which began his lifelong interest in allergy in which he became a leading consultant researching into the relief from asthma and what became known colloquially as Pigeon Lung. His research helped to bring about striking advances in treatments and the identification of the root pathways for allergic reactions. He always championed the holistic approach to patients to discover the best course of treatment for them.  He was widely consulted and known across the world. In the 3rd world he had compassion for mothers with sick children who could not afford the cost of drugs. This saw him coming up with and teaching them the simplest of ways to administer by inhalation asthma drugs through a cone made of available newspaper.

His ongoing research led him to working with and championing the charity Chest, Heart and Stroke, Scotland of which latterly, he was chairman for five years. Invited to join the ranks of the Police as a police surgeon first for Dumbartonshire and then the Glasgow Police, it was a position he greatly valued for over 40 years.

As a self-confessed workaholic, he never sought awards or accolades. He found his satisfaction in giving all of his focus, effort and commitment to get whatever was needed done. A churchman throughout his life he loved music and during his time in hospital he took comfort in it. He was a man of principle who committed to and fought for what he believed in. He lived every moment of life to the full. Sadly missed by family, friends and colleagues he embodied a life of service founded on the sure foundations of his education at Nottingham High School which he often spoke with great affection.

Gavin died in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow on 28th March after a short but sudden illness. He touched many lives. Leaving behind  his wife, Mary, he was the heart of an extended family. Highly valued and respected by the church and the community, he will be sorely missed.
